The new float featured a burning synagogue, while an actor representing Moses held the Tablets of the Law also destined for destruction. It showed the Jews not only as an ancient people of the Bible but also as people who already belonged to the past and had no place in the present. Mocking Kristallnacht in a city that had almost no Jews was not about mocking the present (as, for example, in mocking the mayor) but about remembering an event that made the Jews themselves a past. Neustadters thus made sense of an important event by placing their local experience within recent German history in the making.
